About TEX52

Te · X · 52

Why is it called TEX52?

01 · CURIOSITY

Start with Te.

Te is the chemical symbol for tellurium, an element found on the periodic table.

Tellurium

Chemical symbols are shorthand names scientists use for elements. You may have seen them before without even realising it.

02 · UNDERSTANDING

And 52?

Every element is defined by the number of protons in its nucleus.

52

Tellurium has 52 protons. That number is its atomic number.

Change the number of protons, and you no longer have tellurium. You have a different element.

03 · EXPLORATION

Then what's 128?

Sometimes you'll see tellurium written as Te-128.

So if 52 tells us which element we're looking at, what does 128 mean?

Te — 128

128 is the mass number: the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.

52 protons + 76 neutrons = 128

04 · EXPLORATION

And why is Te-128 interesting?

Because it is extraordinarily slow to change.

Te-128 is radioactive. It eventually changes through radioactive decay — but it does so on a timescale that is almost impossible to imagine.

This is the idea of a half-life: the time it takes for half of a radioactive sample to decay.

05 · EXPLORATION

How long is “slow”?

For tellurium-128, the half-life is roughly 2.2 × 10²⁴ years.

2.2 × 10²⁴

That's roughly a 2 followed by 24 zeros. A number so large that ordinary human intuition stops being very useful.

06 · PERSPECTIVE

Let's make that number human-sized.

The universe is about 13.8 billion years old.

Imagine compressing the entire history of the universe into a single calendar year.

December 31
Today

Suddenly, billions of years become something our minds can picture.

07 · EXPLORATION

Now zoom out.

We just compressed the entire 13.8-billion-year history of the universe into a single year.

Now imagine taking that entire cosmic year and repeating it — again and again.

~160 trillion

If the entire history of the universe were one cosmic year, Te-128's half-life would span roughly 160 trillion such years.

This isn't a literal linear scale — the numbers are far too different for that to be useful. The point is the relationship: even the entire age of our universe is tiny compared with the timescale of Te-128's decay.

08 · APPLICATION

And the X?

That's the part we leave open.

Because science is full of X's: the unknown, the variable, the thing we haven't figured out yet.

TEX52 is about exploring those X's.

09 · CURIOSITY

One name. Two doors into science.

There is another TEX52.

TEX52

TEX52 is also an established human gene symbol.

We didn't choose the name because of the gene. We discovered the coincidence — and loved it.

10 · THE TEX52 APPROACH

Four ways to explore science.

TEX52 is built around four dimensions of scientific exploration.
